ARYA KANYA ASHRAM PROJECT -  A HISTORIC DECISIONYour donations towards the Arya Kanya Ashram Project would be appreciated..... Please donate generously....Contact: aryasamaj@connect.com.fj

At the Executive Meeting of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji held on 9 September 2006 members of the Arya Mahila Mandal Fiji (AMMF) mooted the idea of establishing an Arya Kanya Ashram (Girls Centre) to look after needy school aged girls. The Sabha had commissioned the Arya Baal Ashram (Boys Centre) in 2006.

The National Executive of the Sabha supported the proposal of the AMMF and took a motion to the Annual General Meeting of the Sabha held at the DAV Girls College on 24 June 2007 which gave unanimous approval to the project.

At the same time the members present contributed $11,000 to set the pace for the new initiative and the Arya Mahila Mandal Fiji volunteered to take a leading role in the Arya Kanya Ashram project.

Establishment of Arya Kanya Ashram would add value to the decision taken by the Sabha at its 10th Anniversary Celebration in 1927 to care for the poor and disadvantaged children.

LOCATION

The Arya Kanya Ashram (Girls Centre) would be located within the precincts of  DAV Girls College, 1 Kula Street, Samabula. The location provides an ideal setting for the girls to attain education as both primary and secondary schools are also on the same site.

THE NEED

Everyday the media informs of defenseless young girls being subjected to social and sexual abuse by relatives, defacto relationships, and deviant members of the public. These sorts of cases are normally prevalent in broken family situations and situations of extreme poverty and the AMMF’s concerns and efforts to help girls in such situations are genuine. The decision by the Sabba to establish the Arya Kanya Ashram is a considered one and addresses one of the critical social situations.

Like the Arya Baal Ashram, the Arya Kanya Ashram is to provide facilities where socially vulnerable and disadvantaged girls could be admitted, taken care of and provided appropriate education to better their life and make them responsible citizens of Fiji.

The establishment and operation of the Arya Kanya Ashram would no doubt be able to protect some girls from falling into social vices due to their socially vulnerable situations.

Admission into the Arya Kanya Ashram would strictly be based on the premise that the entrants would pursue education at primary, secondary and tertiary institutions of the Sabha to better themselves and get out of the poverty cycle.

PUBLIC APPEAL

To get the machinery into action the project is put to public appeal to raise funds to establish this invaluable social project.

No venture social in nature has begun or sustained without the support of the general public. Public support is testimony to Sabha’s success in education from early childhood (Kindy) to University level, beginning in 1918 with the establishment of the Sabha’s first primary school at Saweni, Lautoka.

Currently some 10,000 students of all races attend Sabha Schools in Fiji. Since 2005 the Sabha spends $30,500 annually in scholarships internally to assist the poverty stricken students who show academic potentials.

The public support towards the Arya Baal Ashram has been overwhelming since its inception in 2006. The Ashram currently has 16 youngsters all of whom are in schools getting primary and secondary education.

Whilst the Sabha has undertaken this decision it is confident that public support would help realize this earlier than expected. The Sabha realizes that care and protection of girls from social vices and abuse is a public concern and is confident that with public support Sabha would be able to assist some girls realize their personal worth that may not be possible due to social circumstances they may be in.

Through this information sheet the Sabha appeals for public support.

PEOPLE LEADING THE PROJECT

The Arya Mahila Mandal Fiji has volunteered to lead the Arya Kanya Ashram project of the Sabha and the Sabha supports this with deep respect.

Great compassion was demonstrated by the AMMF volunteering to promote the project and the Sabha supports their compassion by providing new project grant of $5,000.00, thus raising the seed money to $16,000.00.
